Eagle River Report

May 31, 2021

FLOW: 900.0 cfs (Avon Water Treatment Plant)

WATER CONDITIONS: Tea Stained, good clarity

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT: Stoneflies, Caddis, Annelids, BWO, Midges

THE LOW DOWN:  We are beginning to see post runoff conditions; high water with good clarity.   Nymphing is the most productive, with large attractor patterns followed by caddis and or baetis patterns.  Streamer fishing has also been moving fish that are sitting on the bank, or in deep slow eddies.  This is also the time to get out on a boat and float the Eagle.  We get a short window every year to this, so we take advantage of it while we can.

Appropriate Patterns

DRIES:  Chubby Chernobyl 8-12, Parachute Baetis 16-22, Elk Hair Caddis 18-20

NYMPHS: Girdle Bug 8-14, Biot Epoxy Back Stone 12-14, Frenchie 14-18, Net Builder Caddis 16, Darth Baetis 18-20, Zebra Midge 18-22

STREAMERS: Baby Gonga, Double Thin Mint, Slump Buster

HINTS: During fast water times heavy is the way to go.  If you are not getting bites, add weight to get down quicker, deeper, and to stay in the strike zone longer before you try changing bugs.
